Dear Junior High Volleyball Players and Parents,
Happy first day of spring! We hope that everyone is having a great school year. The 2009/2010 school year is flying by quickly, and before you know it, the 2010 CYO volleyball season will be upon us. We will begin taking registrations for all fall sports beginning in May. More information on registrations will be provided in upcoming Wednesday Newsletters as well as the church bulletin. Just a reminder, it’s never too early to schedule your daughter’s annual physical. We must have a current physical (less than 1 year old) on file for your daughter before she can begin to practice in August.
Several years ago, the St. Jude Sports Committee voted to have A and B teams for our Jr. Varsity and Varsity Volleyball teams. The Cleveland CYO organization incorporated this concept into their program over twenty years ago in order to provide an opportunity for athletes of various skills to grow and develop at their own pace. In addition, the athletes are able to compete against other teams with similar skills.
We will be having our annual Skills Assessment to help our coaches assist their players during the season and also to determine which team each athlete will play on. The Skills Assessment will be on Monday, July 19th from 6:30pm-9:30pm at the St Jude gym. All 7th and 8th grade girls planning to play are required to attend a skills assessment. Anyone not attending a skills assessment will be placed on the B team. Please contact us immediately if there is a conflict. We are very fortunate to have a few area coaches volunteering their time to help assess the athletes and give guidance and advice to our coaches. Please note that the athletes, directors, coaches, and evaluators will be the only individuals permitted in the gym during assessments.
The Skills Assessment is NOT a try out and can be likened to taking a placement test at a private high school. Depending on the size of the school and the number of applicants, most schools use the test to determine an individual’s academic ability so they can take courses within their capabilities. The benefit of CYO is that everyone has the opportunity to participate. There are no try outs, no cuts, and everyone participates. Regardless of which team a girl plays on, we ask that everyone do their best to support and encourage one another.
Sincerely,
June Lusher
